New Vegetarian Society Trademark Focuses on Inclusion of Plant-Based Ingredients

The Vegetarian Society has unveiled its groundbreaking Plant-Based Trademark, setting a new benchmark for plant-based product certification. Officially launched at the Plant Based World Expo Europe 2024, this trademark aims to provide manufacturers, retailers, and consumers with a trusted symbol that guarantees transparency and quality beyond existing certifications.

What Sets the Plant-Based Trademark Apart?

Unlike other well-known certifications such as Vegan.org, which verifies the absence of animal products, or the Plant Based Foods Association stamp, which focuses on direct replacements for animal-based items, the Plant-Based Trademark introduces a unique dual criterion. To earn this trademark, products must:

  1. Contain no animal-derived ingredients.
  2. Feature a key plant-based characteristic.

This additional requirement ensures that certified items not only meet vegan standards but also embody the essence of plant-based innovation, providing consumers with the confidence to make informed purchases.

Vanessa Brown, Head of Trademarks at the Vegetarian Society, explained:

“Developments in the marketplace see customers looking for terminology which feels acceptable. ‘Plant-Based’ is a term which resonates with them. The Plant-Based Trademark offers checking, registration, and trademark services for products who would like to use Plant-Based wording, backed up by our trusted third-party certification to give customers the confidence to make informed purchases.”

A Certification Designed for the Evolving Market

This initiative arrives at a pivotal time for the plant-based industry, as both demand and scrutiny intensify. Consumers increasingly want to understand not just what they are buying but how these products align with their values of health, sustainability, and ethical consumption. The Plant-Based Trademark reflects this shift, offering a nuanced approach that acknowledges the complexity of plant-based production while fostering trust.

Industry Momentum

Early conversations about adopting the trademark are already underway with several major supermarkets, signaling significant industry buy-in. The Plant-Based Trademark’s global rollout will begin with its implementation in the UK, followed by an international expansion in the coming months.

As the plant-based sector continues its rapid growth, this trademark provides an essential tool for businesses to differentiate themselves in a crowded market. It fosters a spirit of innovation while ensuring that customers can confidently navigate their options.

With the launch of the Plant-Based Trademark, the Vegetarian Society is taking a leadership role in shaping the future of plant-based living—making it easier for consumers and businesses alike to embrace a more sustainable, plant-forward world.
